Vote counting is underway in Iran’s presidential election as polls close across the country. The official results are expected by Saturday afternoon. More than 59 million Iranians were eligible to cast ballots. Around 3.5 million Iranian expatriates were also eligible to vote in 133 diplomatic missions overseas. Four candidates are running for the top executive post, after three dropped out of the race on Wednesday. The winner will succeed President Hassan Rouhani who was barred to run again, due to term limits. People also voted in the country’s city and village council elections. Mid-term elections for parliament and the assembly of experts were held concurrently in a number of cities.
