Yanghang Mosque in Urumqi, capital of northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, is the venue for religious activities for local and foreign Muslims in Xinjiang.
Historically, there were many foreign merchants living in this area, hence the zone name of Yanghang (meaning foreign banks and companies) later became the name of the mosque.
"Yanghang Mosque was built in 1897. In 1909, the local Dehe foreign firm contributed to renovating Yanghang Mosque. Historically, a lot of foreign merchants living in this zone, they opened many banks and companies, hence termed as Yanghang zone. Therefrom Yanghang got its name," said Muhtaram Sherip, imam of the mosque.
Yanghang Mosque is the venue for religious activities not only by local Muslims, but also by overseas Muslims in Urumqi.
"The mosque is so beautiful, and we can come here at any time. But usually we are so busy with our studies, so me and my friends come here every Friday for Juma. People and food, everything is so good here. The people are so friendly actually. Me and my friends are so happy to stay here," said Sidheek Shahees, an Indian student studying in Urumqi.
