STORYLINE:
Uygur workers from rural areas of Xinjiang on Friday debunked the Western claims of forced labor transfer at a press briefing with their own personal experiences.
Yarmamat Himit comes from a small rural village in Hotan County. He now works in an electronics firm in Urumqi.
He said his parents are all farmers with an income covering only basic daily needs, so he wants to help support his family.
The company provided him with free accommodation. He works eight hours a day and takes a two-day off every weekend, said Himit.
He also said that now he makes a stable income that is more than what his parents make. Every month, he remits his saving to his mother.
Just like Yarmamat, many people of different ethnic backgrounds from Xinjiang are engaging in various industries from textiles to automobiles across China to improve their life. Many choose to work away from home to pursue personal development, but Western governments and media still accused Xinjiang of forced labor transfers, which has been denounced by migrant workers from Xinjiang.
"It sounds totally ridiculous for us and people who live on this land. Why do we need to be forced to earn more money and learn more techniques outside our hometown? Do we need to be forced to improve our lives with our own hands? " said Ahety Dolicun, a migrant worker from Xinjiang, in south China's Guangdong Province.
Xinjiang's regional government has rolled out a series of programs to help locals from different ethnic groups find a job close to home or start their own business. The government also encourages people from underdeveloped regions to get employed in affluent parts of China to boost their income.
"In Xinjiang, people of all ethnic groups have freedom to seek employment. Where they work and what kind of work to do all depends on their own will," said said Eliman Mahmudi, chief physician of the Cardiovascular Center of the First Affiliated Hospital of Xinjiang Medical University.
The migrant workers say they are being paid equally as their local colleagues do, and their average income stands at 40,000 yuan per year.
