The removal of an Israeli diplomat from a summit of the African Union has triggered controversy. The union says it suspended Israel’s observer status at the bloc last year, so no Israeli should have attended in the first place.
Video circulating on social media shows security personnel confronting the Israeli diplomat. That’s during the opening ceremony of the summit, before the diplomat leaves the auditorium. Israel has claimed its envoy was an accredited observer and has slammed South Africa and Algeria for the expulsion of the envoy. The regime attained observer status at the bloc in 20-21. South Africa and Algeria protested the decision at the time. They said it runs counter to the bloc’s statements in support of the Palestinians.
