46 years ago today, one of the fastest and most comprehensive processes of power transfer in history was determined through the ballot box. The decisive development was a crystallization of the historic determination and desire of the Iranians to consolidate the foundation of independence, dignity, and national sovereignty. In a landmark referendum held in 1979, more than 98.2 percent of eligible voters said “yes” to establishing an Islamic Republic in Iran. The vote, held less than two months after the victory of the Islamic Revolution, is considered as a turning point in the modern history of Iran.
