India’s capital New Delhi remains under heavy security measures amid ongoing farmer protests against the government’s new agriculture laws.
Thousands of troops have been patrolling the streets, with razor wires and steel barricades being placed on main roads as precautionary measures. Farmers have been holding rallies and sit-ins for months. Their tractor rally on the country’s Republic Day turned violent leaving one person dead and hundreds injured. The farmers demand the government repeal new laws, arguing they will benefit big businesses at their expense. But, the government has ruled out abandoning the reforms, claiming the measure is aimed at boosting rural incomes. Several rounds of talks between the two sides have failed to make a breakthrough.
