Russia concerned about U.S. Black Sea plans

Russia has expressed concern over what it calls increased activities in the Black Sea by governments that do not border its waters. Russian media have quoted Deputy Foreign Minister, Alexander Grushko, as saying that all movements by warships in the Black Sea must be in line with the 1936 Montreux Convention. The convention gives Turkey control over two straits within its borders and regulates the transit of warships from other states. However, the US has recently informed Turkey that it intends to send two of its warships through the straits to the Black Sea. Tensions have been running high between Moscow and Washington since President Joe Biden entered the White House. Russia said on Thursday it was moving more than 10 navy vessels to the Black Sea to take part in planned exercises.
