The UK’s electoral commission has launched a formal probe into the financing of the refurbishment of Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s Downing Street apartment.
The commission, which regulates party and election finances, said there are reasonable grounds to suspect an offence or offences may have been committed. Nonetheless, the premier denied breaking the rules saying he had covered the costs personally. He made the denial during the fiery exchange with the opposition leader in the House of Commons. Keir Starmer, however, came down hard on Johnson over the issue.
