Russia says it is working with other countries to hold an emergency UN Security Council meeting on Afghanistan. A Russian foreign ministry official said Moscow is not planning to evacuate its embassy in the Afghan capital. He said the Taliban have assured Russia and other countries that their diplomatic missions and staff would be safe. Russia says it does not yet recognize the Taliban militants as Afghanistan's new lawful authority. In the US, the secretary of state says American embassy staff members in Kabul are being moved to the city’s airport. The UK, Germany and Canada are also flying out their diplomatic staff. Meanwhile, Pakistan has closed the Torkham crossing with neighboring Afghanistan. It was the last major border crossing out of Afghanistan to fall to the militants.
